My Story

Science has been an integral part of my life since I taught myself how to read at the age of two. At first, I was obsessed with the planets, but then something changed. One day at summer camp when I was around 4 or 5, I learned you could make your own silly putty with glue. I tried to make it at home by pouring multiple bottles of paint all over my arts and crafts table (and the ceiling) in the basement with my best friend at the time. To my disappointment, I did not make silly putty, I got into a lot of trouble, and I couldn't see my friend (or go in the basement) for a week. Legend says there's still some red and orange paint on that ceiling to this day.

My next experiment was much less messy: making ice in a zip lock bag. This was the first time I ever documented my experimental work. I was five, so I did not know how to properly document a scientific experiment (I learned how to keep a proper lab notebook much later in life). At eight, I tried to make "goo" at another friend's house with toothpaste and raspberry jam. Again, to my disappointment, it did not feel like silly putty. I would imagine her mother to not be very happy. At ten, I finally cracked the code. After making slime and silly putty at camp for many years, I successfully made it at home for the very first time with some white glue and laundry detergent. I had to convince my mother to buy me food colouring until she caved. When I was in grade 6, slime, putty, and fidget toys were taking off at schools across Ontario. I hopped on the trend and made many, many batches of slime to my mother's dismay. I made so much slime (and mess), my parents banned me from making it at home! I still made it at my friends' houses anyways.

In grade 7, I transferred schools, and met the people who would change my life forever. I founded the science club along with my grade 7 science teacher, Ms. Seaborn. I also befriended a girl named Kiera who would sit alone at lunch until I decided to sit with her one day. We instantly became friends, and she gifted me a copy of The Elements by Theodore Grey for my twelfth birthday. That one book changed
